About Us...

Unix Unix is a woodworking company founded in 2000 by the actual owner, Francois Filiatrault

After 21 years as a drummer and 14 years as a custom furniture maker, he decided to combine those two passions and start building his own high quality stave shells.

For us, each shell is considered unique. Each wood component and accessory is carefully selected from the first grade lumber and parts in the market, and chosen from your specifications. Coupled with our renowned craftsmanship, our goal is to provide you with a true piece of art.

Why stave shell?

Among the tree main ways to build a snare shell, the stave is the more natural one. Having the wood grain upside down (vertically) gives the bearing edge end grain and more strength.

A stave shell has almost 6 times less glue than a ply shell.

Some might argue that steam bend shells offer more resonance then a ply shell because of their unique ply. However, the steam bend technique used alters the natural properties of the wood.
